Lennard Nikolai, Surrey Teacher, Suspended Over 'Pink Shorts' Comment

Suspended Teacher Promised Higher Grades To Students In 'Pink Shorts'

A Surrey high school teacher has been suspended until April 2015 after promising high marks to students wearing pink shorts, and asking a female student whether she played lingerie football.

The inappropriate comments in a gym class were one of two complaints against Lennard Nikolai to B.C.'s Teacher Regulation Branch.

In 2012, Nikolai slammed a student up against a wall at Queen Elizabeth Secondary School, according to a consent resolution agreement. He also yelled and swore at students, and kept confiscated replica weapons in his office. He was subsequently suspended.

But just 10 days after returning to work from that suspension, Nikolai told gym students at Lord Tweedsmuir Secondary School that anyone who played rugby or football would receive higher grades. A female student then said she played a different kind of football, and he asked if it was lingerie football.

Referring to a student's clothing, he also said, "Anyone wearing pink shorts like that gets a 10."

According to the provincial decision, Nikolai also addressed students with the term "LG," meaning "little girls" and sarcastically asked a female who fell down whether she needed CPR.

Two days later, he looked to have fallen asleep while a guest speaker gave a presentation to his class at Johnston Heights Secondary School.

Nikolai resigned from the Surrey school district in June 2013 as part of a settlement agreement.

He must now complete a boundaries course administered by the Teacher Regulation Branch, as well as anger management through the Justice Institute.

Nikolai may be reviewed for professional misconduct if he breaks any terms of his discipline.
