Princess Charlene Pregnant: Monaco Royal Due Before End Of Year

There Will Be A New Royal In Monaco Before The End Of 2014

It may not be the royal pregnancy news we were waiting for, but it looks like the European royalty will be gaining a new heir, as Princess Charlene of Monaco announced her pregnancy today, reports ABC News.

The Princess, 36, is a former Olympic swimmer originally from South Africa, and is married to Albert II, Prince of Monaco. Albert is the son of Rainier III, Prince of Monaco, and the late Grace Kelly. The couple released a statement on Friday, saying "the birth is expected by the end of the year."

Charlene and Albert's child will be the heir to the throne upon Prince Albert II's death. Although the prince has two children out of wedlock, they are not considered legitimate heirs — though as Maclean's pointed out in 2013, that would have been a possibility in the face of no other option.

The couple married in 2011, and the princess did not put herself under any pressure to get pregnant right away, reported the Daily Mail.

"It will happen; it will happen," she said.
