Short track coach Jonathon Cavar leaves Speed Skating Canada to take US job

CALGARY - Speedskating coach Jonathon Cavar is leaving Speed Skating Canada to take over as head coach of the U.S. short-track team.

Cavar spend seven years as part of Canada's coaching staff. Based in Calgary, he coached Olympian Jessica Gregg and contributed to Canada's women's relay silver medals at the 2010 and 2014 Games.

"Working with the team at Speed Skating Canada has been an amazing experience," Cavar said in a statement. "It was a privilege to be involved with this hard working group of individuals. I have learned so much during these seven years.

"I am enthusiastic about this new opportunity with US Speedskating and look forward to the challenge of training athletes to deliver first-rate international performances."

The Ottawa native won the Canadian short track title in 1998. He was also the first Canadian to win a medal, silver in the 500 metres, at the inaugural 1994 World Junior Short Track Championships.
