One of Hollywood's most respected filmmakers is teaming with celebrated Canadian author Margaret Atwood to develop her "MaddAddam" trilogy into an HBO show, Deadline reported Wednesday.

Darren Aronofsky is executive producing a project that will turn Atwood's "speculative fiction" books "Oryx and Crake," "The Year of the Flood" and "MaddAddam" into a drama series. The "Black Swan" helmer may also direct.

Atwood confirmed the news on her Twitter account.

"I’ve met with Darren’s team, we’ve traded many ideas, we’ve started building out the structure," the author told The National Post.

"Not simple! We are all very involved and excitement is running high."

Atwood's trilogy imagines a 21st century, corporate-controlled world decimated by genetic engineering, left with a few humans to fight for survival.

Aronofsky, a big fan of the author's work, said the project is still in its early stages, but he hopes she'll be deeply involved with it, Vulture reported Thursday.

"The chance to work with Margaret Atwood — I love her," he said. "It's just a huge thrill ... She's one of my favorite writers."
