"This city needs a city-friendly mayor and this province needs a city-friendly premier," said Kelly. "Kathleen, that city-friendly leader, that premier, is you."
The endorsement shouldn't come as a complete surprise. Kelly served as a Liberal MP in the early 1980s. But he is also a fiscal conservative who supported Rob Ford's agenda before the crack video scandal enveloped the mayor. Kelly has served on the executive committees for mayors Mel Lastman, David Miller and Ford, a list that cuts right across the political spectrum.
Kelly is currently serving as Toronto's mayor with Ford away at a rehab facility located north of the city until the end of this month.
Kelly's profile grew when he took on many of the powers stripped from Ford in a council voted last November as the crack scandal dominated the news.
Last winter Wynne chose to meet with Kelly instead of Ford to coordinate how the city and province responded to the devastating ice storm.
