Police were called to a cafe on Woodstream Boulevard in the area of Highway 7 and Martin Grove Road at 6:43 p.m. Friday regarding reports of shots fired.
Two adult men were found with gunshot wounds, according to police. One man died at the scene and the other was taken to hospital with serious injuries.
The victim has been identified as Sarhad Sadiq, 36, of Nobleton. The identity of the injured victim is not being released, police say.
The suspect has been identified as David Odesho, 24, of Toronto. He is wanted for first-degree murder and attempted murder.
The suspect is considered to be armed and dangerous, police say. Anyone with information regarding his whereabouts is urged not to approach him, but to call 911 immediately.
Investigators are also looking for a white 2012 Mazda 3 four-door car observed by witnesses leaving the scene.
Previous deadly shootings
Police spokesman Sgt. Clint Whitney is calling on any witnesses to come forward, noting that the area includes a number of restaurants and other attractions. A bachelor party was underway at the venue next door.
"We believe there were a fair amount of witnesses in the area," he said, adding witnesses can either contact the York Regional Police homicide unit or leave tips anonymously at CrimeStoppers.
Whitney said "multiple shots" had been fired, but would not say if the victims were part of a gunfight.
The normally quiet community north of Toronto has recently seen two other deadly shootings.
A man — later revealed to have alleged Mafia links — was shot dead in April just a few blocks from the scene of Friday night’s shooting. Another man was shot and killed in May, outside a HomeSense store.
Both cases were found to be separate, targeted killings, Whitney said.
"The victims were specifically targeted — not random, not gang related in the sense of street gangs."
He added it is "too early" to discuss whether there might be a connection between Friday's shooting, and either earlier killing.Suggest a correction
