When it comes to Canadian bookworms, Calgarians are leading the pack.

Online bookstore and retailer Amazon.ca revealed its second-annual list of the most well-read cities in Canada, and Calgary has jumped a spot since last year to earn the top ranking in the country.

Amazon compiled sales data of all Amazon.ca book sales in print and Kindle formats from May 2013 to May 2014 for cities with more than 100,000 residents.

"Whether it's a sci-fi thriller or a love story, this year's data shows a nation of passionate readers with a hunger for a variety of genres," said Alexandre Gagnon, country manager for Amazon.ca, in a press release.

Western Canadian cities, including Vancouver, Regina, Saskatoon and Edmonton, rounded out the top five book-buying spots, with readers in Vancouver purchasing the most print books and readers in Calgary ordering the most e-books.

Saskatonians purchased the most novels written by Canadian authors, while Calgarians selected plenty of titles from the sci-fi and self-help genres.

And while readers scooped up plenty of new titles in the past year, the timeless favourite The Very Hungry Caterpillar was the most purchased children's book.
