Thanks to our favourite old soul songstress Taylor Swift, we’ve all been exposed to the glory of the retro swimsuit.

In fact, we rarely see Miss Swift frolicking in anything but her signature high-waisted bikini bottoms and halter-top, usually in a polka dot or stripe pattern.

Forget the itsy bitsy Brazilian bikini for a minute and join us in our affection for all things retro. Women who lack the curvaceous hips of Kim Kardashian would benefit most from a stylish “retrokini,” if you will.

The ways in which it can compliment the body are numerous. High-waisted bottoms are great at creating the illusion of fuller hips while elongating legs. Ruching is typical of retro-inspired swimwear, and perfect for those who aren’t quite so confident in their midsection. And a strategically placed ruffle? Well, this adornment could be the best thing to ever happen to a swimsuit, creating the illusion of bigger busts or taking attention away from larger thighs.

If you don’t want to feel quite so exposed, a one-piece maillot à la Marilyn Monroe could be the solution -- it's modest, yet doesn't look frumpy.

This summer, channel your inner Jayne Mansfield with these pin-up girl-inspired swimsuits perfect for some old fashioned fun in the sun.
