The MuchMusic Video Awards are known for crazy red carpet arrivals, but only once has the MMVA red carpet actually been invaded.
In 2005, the boys of Billy Talent, the most nominated and awarded band in MMVA history, rolled up on the red carpet in an actual WWII Sherman Tank. That year the weaponized rockers won MMVAs for Best Rock Video and Video of the Year for "River Below."
"The MMVA Red Carpet has seen Ice Cream Trucks, Hamster Balls, Hot Tubs, and countless other unpredictable and outlandish arrivals in recent years, But it was 2005 where it REALLY all began,” said Natalie Lambert, M3 Associate Producer. "The Black Eyed Peas, Arcade Fire, and the Backstreet Boys were just a few big names to walk the carpet that year, but Billy Talent had something else planned.
"In Toronto, it’s not uncommon to see an ambulance, a TTC or Double Decker bus in the downtown core, but a Second World War Sherman Tank, you just don't see every day! That year I was floor directing for VJ Hannah Sung, and The Billy Talent arrival took everyone on and off the carpet by complete surprise. I believe they set the precedent for what future artists would have up their sleeves every year. It was definitely a moment I'll never forget."
