Spain appears unlikely to repeat as World Cup champions after a devastating showing in their Group B game against the Netherlands on Friday.

La Roja fell 5-1 to a Dutch team that powered forward on the strength of striker Robin van Persie, who might have scored the goal of the tournament when he put a diving header behind goalkeeper Iker Casillas.

The last time Spain surrendered five or more goals was when it fell 6-2 in a friendly against Scotland in 1963, writer Nate Silver tweeted.

That, and much more, provided fodder for mockery on social media of the team's disastrous performance.
