After an almost flawless match against Romania's Simona Halep, Eugenie Bouchard has taken the semifinals of Wimbledon and will be going on to play in the finals, the first time a Canadian has ever done so.
The Montreal-born 20-year-old, who made it to the semifinals at the Australian Open in January, as well as the semifinals at the French Open, will be playing her first finals at a Grand Slam tournament on Saturday. She achieved her first WTA title earlier this year in Germany, and is the first woman to make it to her third straight Grand Slam semifinal since Dinara Safina in 2009.
She's also guaranteed a top-10 ranked spot thanks to these results (she's currently ranked at 13); she'll be No. 7 if she loses, and No. 6 if she wins.
The Wimbledon courts have been hard on many of the top players in 2014, with top-seeded Serena Williams not only getting eliminated from singles' play by France’s Alize Cornet, but also leaving the court in the middle of the doubles' match on Tuesday. Similarly, last year's male singles champion, Andy Murray, was beaten in the quarter-finals.
Bouchard isn't the only Canadian making history on the Wimbledon courts this year. Milos Raonic, the 23-year-old from Thornhill, Ont., is playing in the semifinals against seven-time Wimbledon champ Roger Federer tomorrow.
Bouchard will be facing Czech's Petra Kvitova in the finals, but we know there will be plenty more from her in the years to come.
In a post-match interview after the quarter-finals, Bouchard didn't shy away from her chance to take the spotlight. "As the great champions get older, the new ones start coming in, and I think it's a really exciting time for women's tennis," she told the interviewer.
