Lemonade Stand, Fundraiser Smashes Goal For Boy's Surgery

Lemonade Stand Helps Smash $20,000 Goal For Boy's Surgery

The sweet friendship between two seven-year-old boys in British Columbia — and one's simple wish for the other — has led to an outpouring of donations from strangers around the world.

Quinn Callander spearheaded a fundraising campaign so that his best friend, Brayden Grozdanich, could get pain-relieving surgery in the U.S. Brayden has cerebral palsy, which tightens his muscles as he grows. He's been going through painful physiotherapy to keep walking.

A similar surgery is available in Canada, but it's more invasive than the American method. Brayden's parents were ready to take out a loan to cover the $15,000 operation and travel costs, when Quinn stepped up with an idea, according to CTV News.

Quinn's parents helped him set up an online fundraiser with a goal of $20,000. He and Brayden recorded a YouTube video, and set up a lemonade stand over the weekend — while wearing matching shirts that read, "When life hands you lemons... make lemonade."

The pair have been friends since kindergarten, attend the same school in Maple Ridge, and belong to the same Scouts group.

Quinn told CBC News there's a simple reason behind the effort for Brayden: "Because he's my friend and I want to be nice."

Social media has spread the best friends' story, which as led to more than $50,000 raised to date (July 8).

An update posted on the fundraising page explained that "all funds raised past our goal will go to help the family with travel expenses and physiotherapy."

Brayden's surgery has been scheduled for August, reported CBC News.
