Twitter users were all abuzz Wednesday night at the news that Alec Baldwin could play a Rob Ford-like mayor of New York in a new television show.

Deadline reported exclusively that Baldwin could portray a politician who smokes crack and "behaves outlandishly" in a one-hour drama series for NBC Productions.

The pilot for the as-yet-untitled show will be written by Wells Tower and executive-produced by Cary Brokaw and the actor himself.

But that's not all that Baldwin is up to. Deadline said he's in talks to play the head of the CIA in the next "Mission: Impossible" movie, and that he's also discussing a role alongside Will Smith in a film about football concussions.

News of the projects comes after Baldwin said he retired from public life in an essay for New York Magazine last February.

Social media users were divided on the idea of seeing "30 Rock's" Jack Donaghy play a character not unlike Toronto's controversial mayor.
