According to police, Spirit's owner heard the Belgian shepherd barking outside the home in the 12700 block of 58 Avenue, just before 7:30 p.m. PT on April 28.
The owner, whose identity has not been released, told police she looked out, and saw a man swinging a knife and stabbing the Belgian shepherd. She screamed and the man left, jumping over a fence.
Spirit underwent extensive surgery to treat some of the many stab wounds the dog received on the face, head and neck.
Officers were not able to locate or identify the man suspected of injuring Spirit, and have now released a photo believed to be him.
"After speaking with witnesses and viewing surveillance footage in the area, police now believe the suspect is a white male in his late 20s to early 30s with a medium build and dark hair, wearing a checkered shirt, backpack, and jeans with a rip near the knee area," a statement from Surrey RCMP says.
