It was earlier reported that a girl had been hit by a vehicle, and the family has now confirmed it was Georgia Walsh.
“The Walsh family; John, Jillian, Duncan, Liam and Finn are saddened to inform you that their beautiful daughter and wonderful sister Georgia has passed,” the family said in a release.
“Taken from them suddenly in an accident today, the family asks that they be given their space and privacy to come to terms with this incredible loss. Your prayers are appreciated.”
Around 4 p.m. ET Tuesday, Georgia Walsh was hit by the minivan in the Bayview Avenue and Millwood Road area, in Toronto's Leaside neighbourhood.
Paramedics initially reported the girl had suffered severe head trauma and she had life-threatening injuries. She was later pronounced dead at the Hospital for Sick Children.
A 50-year-old man driving a minivan southbound on McRae Drive had made a right turn to go westbound on Millwood Road when the child was hit.
Const. Clint Stibbe said the girl was alone at the time, but her mother "was in the area."
No charges have been laid, but police said investigators have spoken with the driver and are still working to determine the cause of accident.
Police are asking the public for assistance
Lane restrictions on Eglinton Avenue have made more drivers take McCrae Road, according to some area residents.
“It’s crazy. Everyone’s zipping through the lights, trying to bypass and get going on the way,” said Melissa Gracey.
Coun. John Parker expressed his condolences.
“We will find out what happened and how it happened, and right now our thoughts are with the family,” he said.
