FORT MCPHERSON, N.W.T. - The government of the Northwest Territories has dissolved the council in the community of Fort McPherson and has appointed an administrator to take over running the hamlet.

A news release posted to the territorial government's website says the new administrator, Bill Buckle, was "appointed to help the community government get back to a positive financial position."

The hamlet has run up a budget deficit of more than $2 million in the last three years.

Buckle's appointment became effective late last week and will last an indefinite term.

Buckle has extensive experience in municipal management in communities across the Northwest Territories and Nunavut and was previously municipal supervisor in Fort McPherson.

Community Affairs Minister Robert McLeod says dissolving the council was not a step he took lightly.

“The Fort McPherson hamlet council has faced some challenges over the past few years and I am confident this move is in the best interests of residents and will provide the community government with a good basis for beginning its recovery.”
