SIU probes shooting involving police in Newmarket

A man is in hospital with serious injuries after he was shot following a confrontation with York Regional Police in Newmarket early Tuesday.

The shooting happened just after midnight as police responded to reports of a gunshot fired on Calgain Road, near Davis Drive and Lorne Avenue.

The man was taken to a local hospital before he was transferred to Sunnybrook Hospital.

The province's Special Investigations Unit, which probes all police shootings, is investigating.

No police officers were injured in the incident.
