MONCTON, N.B. - New Brunswick Liberal Leader Brian Gallant says he would restore the level of funding that was devoted to women's equality before it was cut three years ago.

The Progressive Conservative government abolished the Advisory Council on the Status of Women in 2011 and replaced it last year with the Voices of New Brunswick Women Consensus-Building Forum.

The advisory council received about $400,000 annually in funding, not including in-kind support.

The group that replaced it receives about $200,000 annually, but most of that is in-kind support such as office space.

Gallant says a Liberal government would restore the $400,000 in core funding and may provide in-kind support.

He says in order to make progress on women's equality, it's important to have the funding needed for research.
