A Keith Urban concert in Massachusetts went south over the weekend with police taking 50 concertgoers into protective custody and "a number of others arrested for alcohol-related issues" while 46 more required medical treatment for "alcohol-related illnesses," 22 of whom were transported to hospital.
The Australian country star brought his Raise 'Em Up tour to The Xfinity Center in Mansfield, Mass., near Boston, and attracted 18,000 fans.
According to a local politician quoted in the Sun Chronicle, the problems came from inadequate security and country music's increasingly young fanbase.
"They were totally outnumbered. It was a real party atmosphere," Selectman Chairman George Dentin said. “Country always gives us a problem lately.”
The Sun Chronicle also reported that "the chaotic scene at the venue led officials to declare a mass casualty incident just before 9 p.m. due to the number of people becoming ill in a short span of time."
Ambulances from five surrounding communities were called in to help deal with the situation.
Perhaps not aware of the extent of what had happened, Keith Urban posted a video message after the show that said, in part: "Gosh up on the lawn tonight, that was nutso. It was so cool!"
