Boston punk rock group Dropkick Murphys enjoyed themselves at Heavy Montreal over the weekend while throwing a playful dig at fans of the Montreal Canadiens: namely beating up a Canadiens doll and ripping its head off.
As reported by the noted hockey blog Puck Daddy, the group were between songs when bassist Ken Casey spoke to the crowd. Casey notes how the audience are a "hard-working crowd" and don't look "like a bunch of crybabies."
"You'd almost think this was a Boston Bruins crowd right here," Casey says as shown on a video on his Facebook page. The bassist then invites his son Liam to the stage with his son holding a stick with a Montreal Canadiens doll attached to it upside down. "He hates the Montreal Canadiens more than anybody," Ken Casey screams as Liam saunters down the stage runway beating the doll into the stage repeatedly. The youngster then puts the doll out of its misery by ripping its head off. "My son Liam coming onstage during our Montreal set and tearing the head off a Habs doll in front of 50,000 people!"
"This takes some serious cajones, I must admit," Puck Daddy blogger Harrison Mooney wrote regarding the incident." There are about 50,000 people out there, and they're not just Habs fans. They're heavy metal fans. I wouldn't antagonize 50,000 metalhead Habs fans for all the money in the world."
Mooney however also noted how the group covered Queen's "We Are The Champions" in Vancouver back in 2011, site of where the Bruins defeated the Vancouver Canucks to win the Stanley Cup that same year. The Bruins lost to the Canadiens in the playoffs last season in a seven-game series in the Eastern Conference semifinals.

As for the band, Dropkick Murphys have a few weeks off before their next performance which is at Riotfest in early September at Toronto's Downsview Park. Watch out, Maples Leafs fans!
