Are there more skunks than usual in Calgary this year?
Maybe, say local pest control experts.
It could be other factors at play, but regardless, skunk removal calls are higher than they've been in years.
Matthew Gosselin, who owns Elite Pest Control, told the Calgary Sun his company is receiving four or five calls a week from "all over town."
It's gotten to the point where the company can't respond to any more calls at the moment because all the traps are being used.
Iris Bobeau, a customer service represetative with Cal-Rid Exterminators told the Calgary Herald her company is in the same boat and just purchased 12 new traps because the other 50 are all in use.
However, Ken Cheek, a wildlife zoologist and the owner of Calgary Humane Wildlife Control, said that while his company is also having a record year "that doesn't necessarily mean there's more skunks."
He told the Herald it might be the case that previous poor relocation efforts are to blame, or maybe people are just noticing more skunks.
Exterminator Bill Martin said the key to skunk removal is placing a call when the skunk is first spotted — before it has time to mate.
“We get calls from people after the babies are born — it’s pretty labour intensive to get rid of them,” he said.
If skunks are a problem for you, the City of Calgary asks that you call a local pest control company, instead of calling 311.
