Geoff MacLellan says although the province is the regulator of the line it contracts out safety inspections to the federal department.
MacLellan says he's aware of concerns expressed by some members of the public after three recent derailments along the line that runs from Truro to Sydney.
He says it's also appropriate to take another look following the release this week of a Transportation Safety Board report that found 18 key factors in a fatal rail car explosion in Lac-Megantic, Que., in July 2013.
MacLellan says his department is in the process of trying to set up a meeting with federal officials.
He says there could also be a request for another inspection of the line to follow up one carried out last October.
