A severe thunderstorm left Winnipeg and other parts of southeastern Manitoba under water on Thursday evening, after an estimated 50 to 75 millimetres of rain fell on the region.
CBC News reports at least two vehicles were partly submerged due to flooding, at the popular underpass at Higgins Avenue and Main Street, in Winnipeg. According to the network, other cars and transit buses remained stuck in place nearby as the heavy rain shut down streets, overwhelmed storm sewers, and cut off power to street lights.
Soon after, residents took to Twitter to catalogue the effects of the storm.
"Guy now out and trying to salvage anything he can as his car sinks," tweeted Jeremy Desrochers. "Huge rains continue in #Winnipeg. #MBSTORM."
This flooding follows extreme weather warnings from Environment Canada, which wrote, "50 mm of rainfall had been received from southwestern portions of the city" by 6:45 p.m. CT.
"Elsewhere in the city reports of 25 to 50 mm have been received. This system is extremely slow moving and further rainfall amounts of 10 to 30 mm are possible."
The agency also calls for heavy rain on Sunday, and Monday.
Winnipeg police has cautioned drivers to stay off the road, and emergency workers are on the scene, as per CTV News.
