A convicted killer was last seen getting into a waiting SUV as he escaped from a federal prison in B.C.

Norman Gilbert Riel, 41, is serving a sentence for second degree murder, said RCMP. He fled the medium and minimum-security Mission Institution (about 80 kilometres east of Vancouver) on Sunday.

He was convicted of killing Patrick Pugh, a pot dealer who refused to hand over money during a break-in of his Vancouver penthouse in 1994, reported The Vancouver Sun.

Police advise anyone who sees Riel not to approach him. His criminal record includes several convictions for robbery and firearms offences in Edmonton and Vancouver.

The RCMP noted that Riel has been known to travel to the U.S. to avoid arrest.

He's described as Metis, 5'8" tall and 210 pounds with brown eyes and long brown hair that may be tied in a bun.

A cash reward is offered for information which leads to his arrest.
