A B.C. university student who compiled a study guide to help his sister, a Grade 12 student, during the province's public teachers' strike has found himself assisting hundreds more teens.
Alex Land, who recently graduated from Surrey's Enver Creek Secondary himself, put together a list of online tutorials for the topics covered in Foundations of Math 12 and English 12 AP for his sister, Sabrina. Then he figured the document might be helpful to other students, so he added Pre Calculus 12 topics and posted the whole thing online as a Google document.
His homemade study guide is being shared online and attracting kudos on his Facebook post. "You are a superhero dude," commented Triveni Dhir. "Good guy land," posted Justine Crawford.
"There is so much content out there, and it can be an extremely tedious task to filter out what is useful and what isn’t. I tried to do that step for them as best I could using my recent experience, so all they needed was a willingness to learn," Land, 18, told The Huffington Post B.C. in an email.
B.C. public school teachers have been on strike since late June in a contract dispute with the province. Two weeks into this school year, there are still no signs of a resolution.
"I love using technology to enhance education," said Land, who is studying software systems at Simon Fraser University.
Land says teachers went through a job action in his last few years of high school that hindered extracurricular activities. He said the situation taught him organizational skills because he helped run student events in the teachers' absence.
"If students in Grade 12 right now take the initiative to learn on their own, I think it will help them if they choose to attend post secondary, where self-guided learning is much more prominent," he said.
"An unexpected positive to the strike, perhaps."
