NBA star Paul George defended embattled NFL player Ray Rice on Twitter Thursday, then deleted the posts and apologized in another.

Rice was cut by the Baltimore Ravens and suspended indefinitely by the NFL this week after the release of a video showing him hitting the woman who is now his wife in the face and knocking her unconscious.

George wrote that Rice should be allowed to play and that if "a woman hit you first and attacking YOU.. Then you obviously ain't beatin HER."

George later deleted the posts, but here are screenshots, courtesy of The Huffington Post:

George then posted a new tweet that read in part: "My intent was not to downplay the situation."
