FREDERICTON - The New Brunswick NDP is promising specific protections for the province's civil service if elected Sept. 22.

Leader Dominic Cardy says the NDP would introduce whistleblower legislation for civil servants and make it illegal for legislature members to interfere in the allocating and management of government contracts.

The party is promising to eliminate the involvement of legislature members in the hiring and firing of civil servants as well.

The party would also eliminate the practice of moving government offices from opposition-held constituencies to government ridings.

Cardy says while the measure would result in savings, he isn't able to say how much.
