Man Falls To His Death While Hiking Mountain Near Squamish

SQUAMISH, B.C. - A male has fallen to his death while hiking a mountain near Squamish, B.C.

RCMP say he fell while climbing Stadium Glacier, which is on Sky Pilot Mountain.

Insp. Konrad Golbeck says Squamish RCMP received a report a male was hurt badly in a fall.

Golbeck says police and emergency crews rushed to the scene, which is a three-hour hike from the Sea-to-Sky Gondola.

He says the climber died before rescuers reached him.

No other details were released.

UPDATE - Sept. 15, 2014: Michael Taylor of Victoria, B.C. was identified as the victim in the fatal fall by the BC Coroners Service. The 29-year-old was hiking and climbing with a friend when he fell about 300 metres down the glacier.

"Despite help provided almost immediately by fellow-mountaineers who were in the area, he died at the scene," said the agency.
