Death of Serena Vermeersch, 17, now a homicide investigation

The Integrated Homicide Investigation Team has taken over the investigation into the death of 17-year-old Serena Vermeersch.

Vermeersch's body was found Tuesday night in the 14600 block of 66 Avenue near railroad tracks in Surrey's East Newton neighbourhood, said RCMP.

She had earlier been reported missing.

An autopsy to determine the cause of death was scheduled for this morning. Up until now, police had only said the death was suspicious and were canvassing neighbours in the area for more information.

RCMP are also looking for surveillance video that may reveal more information about Vermeersch's final hours.

Vermeersch was last seen alive on Monday night at 8:15 p.m. PT, as she boarded a transit bus at the corner of 128 Street and 64 Avenue.

Police say the five-foot-eight-inch, 135-pound teen would have been wearing a blue tank top and black shorts.

Investigators would also like to speak with a man seen on the railroad tracks in the area of 66 Avenue and Hyland Road between 5 p.m. and 7:15 p.m. Tuesday night. He was seen leaving in a grey or silver pickup truck.
