Wolverine Statue Petition Calls For Monument In Edmonton

Petition Calls For Wolverine Statue In Edmonton
Courtoisie

A Change.org petition is calling on Edmonton's mayor Don Iveson and city council to erect a life-sized statue of Marvel Comics' Wolverine in city hall.

The petition says the comic book character's fictional place of birth makes him worthy of such a tribute.

"Not many popular or exciting fictional characters are born Canadian, but superhero and adventurer Wolverine isn't just Canadian, he's an Albertan too," the petition states.

"I think it would make a lot of people really proud to live in Edmonton and raise morale to erect a life size statue of this character in City Hall, or even perhaps Churchill Square or the Alberta Legislature Grounds," writes Jesse Seitz, who kicked off the petition.

"It would also become an interesting tourist attraction for comic book fans visiting our city."

This isn't the first time the city has tried to honour Wolverine. A petition in 2013, although clearly satirical, called for a 1000-foot statue and closed at 1,785 signatures.

As of 3 p.m. Saturday, Seitz's petition had less than 500 signatures out of the 100,000 target, but it could net a lot more support after shooting up to the top of /r/Canada on Reddit, and considering a Kickstarter to raise funds for a Robocop statue in Detroit scored $50,000, we wouldn't be surprised if Edmonton's geeky dream became a reality.
