Education: Has a bachelor of arts in political science from Dalhousie University in Halifax.

Political career: Worked for the NDP at the provincial and federal levels in New Brunswick, Nova Scotia and Ontario. Acclaimed leader of the New Brunswick NDP in March 2011 after the other candidate was disqualified.

Family: Married to Margot.
