The Flame Base Layer from Toronto-based start-up FuelWear may run on batteries, but it's washable, and it senses when you need more heat and when you need to cool down, eliminating the need to shed layers during winter outdoor activities.
For example, during a day of downhill skiing or snowboarding, you're likely to work up a sweat on the slopes, but standing in the lift line can bring your body temperature right back down again. This shirt wants to change all that.
The fabric itself is made of bamboo, said to be ultra-soft, and already has moisture-wicking and anti-odour capabilities. Red panels on the front and back of the shirt are the heating elements.
Developers estimate that the technology is capable of increasing body temperature by 10°C for three hours at a time, and smaller increments are possible for longer durations.
Crowdfunding efforts have been a smashing success, seeing the Flame Base Layer far surpass its original goal of $20,000 to reach more than $52,000.
It's still possible to pre-order the shirt for $150, a significant savings on its projected retail price of $250. Shipment is expected in time for winter fun.
