An Edmonton councillor would like to see the "City of Champions" slogan and signs retired.
Ward 5 councillor Michael Oshry says the 10 signs, which flank the entrance ways into Edmonton, are dated.
“The 1970s — I’m guessing that’s what they are — signs, with the catchphrase, are outdated, just don’t belong,” he told council on Tuesday, reports the Edmonton Journal.
Oshry told Metro Edmonton the signs would be an easy and affordable fix.
“It might seem like a small thing, but it’s the first thing people see when they come to the city."
And although he'd like to see the "City of Champions" slogan retired, be thinks all Edmontonians should have input.
Edmonton council has debated changing the city's moniker before, reports the Journal.
In 1994, the Edmonton Chamber of Commerce suggested "Turning Up the Heat" as a new slogan. In 2008, council voted to keep the slogan, rejecting a "tilting pyramid" design that was pitched to replace the current signs.
The only time the signs have undergone a makeover, in fact, was last year when an elaborate prank saw "City of Champions" replaced with slogans like "Suck It Calgary," "Road Construction City" and "City of Shenanigans."
