Via Rail confirms a passenger train heading from Montreal to Ottawa struck a pickup truck at a private level crossing in De Beaujeu, Que., early Thursday evening.

Via Rail spokeswoman Mylène Belanger said Train 59 left Montreal at 4:26 p.m. ET and was destined to arrive in Ottawa at around 6 p.m. before continuing to Toronto.

The crash happened just a few kilometres from the Quebec-Ontario border at about 5 p.m., Belanger added.

She said a passenger in the truck was injured and taken to hospital, but none of the 92 train passengers were injured.

Delays are expected but the train was expected to resume its route by 7 p.m. ET.

Passengers on the train said they felt a sudden stop and heard a crunching sound when the collision happened. Soon after, engineers told them the train had struck a truck.
