Sexual Assault Complaint Filed At Royal Alexandra Hospital

Police Investigate Alleged Sex Assault At Edmonton Hospital

Edmonton police are investigating after claims that a dementia patient was sexually assaulted at the Royal Alexandra Hospital.

Police told the Edmonton Journal the EPS sexual assault team is working to verify claims of rape, after a 52-year-old woman filed a complaint over the weekend.

The complaint came days after staff were called in to intervene after a fellow patient was caught exposing himself to the woman, her daughter told the Journal.

Alberta Health Services (AHS) spokeswoman Colleen Turner told CBC News that AHS is working closely with police on the investigation, and that AHS will also conduct in internal review.

“Alberta has legislation and policies in place to protect people in care,” said Matthew Grant, spokesman for Health Minister Stephen Mandel.

“That being said, any time abuse is reported it needs to be reported to the authorities and it needs to be investigated," he said, adding Mandel has asked fro a full briefing from AHS on the incident.

According to iNews 880, the investigation is ongoing, with no word on possible suspects or charges.
