Town council in Chestermere, just east of Calgary, voted six to one Monday to turn their community into a city and claim a larger share of provincial revenue as a result.
Mayor Patricia Matthews says the town has experienced dramatic growth in recent years and the move will increase economic opportunities, as well as enhance its recognition.
The provincial government must still approve the changeover, which Matthews hopes will take place by the start of 2015.
A switch would leave Alberta with 18 cities.
An Alberta community must have more than 10,000 residents to gain city status, and Chestermere became eligible in 2007. (CHQR)
