OTTAWA - The Mounties had planned to replace most of the RCMP's traditional fur hats with tuques, but the federal government has ordered that decision reversed. Here are some facts about the hats, muskrat pelts and tuques:

Number of tuques ordered: 10,000 with options for two additional shipments of 5,000 apiece

Average number of muskrat hats issued annually: 930

Number of muskrats trapped in Canada annually: About 200,000 to 250,000

Average price to trappers for a muskrat pelt: About $10

Cost of muskrat hat: about $48

Faux fur: Rejected as alternative. Did not stand up to the elements (particularly rain), or provide same level of warmth in extreme winter conditions
