They were most likely being used as coyote bait, but 20 abandoned puppies will instead become beloved pets after a farmer luckily spotted them in a field.

Greg Zubiak, a Saskatchewan hunter, was scouting hunting locations near North Battleford last Friday, when he came across several boxes containing three-to-six-week-old puppies.

"As I walked up, they all just kind of looked at me and I guess my moose hunt was over. I just said, 'OK, come on,' and as soon as I said that, they all come running to me," Zubiak told CBC News about his chance encounter.

Zubiak says he wrapped the puppies in his extra hunting gear, trying to warm them up, before he loaded them into his truck and brought them to Battleford's Humane Society.

According to the shelter, the animals were dehydrated and flea-bitten, but are on the road to recovery. They say the response to the dogs has been overwhelming.

By Saturday, the Humane Society's Facebook post garnered more than 50,000 views, with people around the world offering to help.

The shelter says until they find suitable homes for the dogs, they are accepting donations of puppy food, kennels, teddy bears, and money to cover vet bills.

Anyone who wants to help is encouraged to visit the Humane Shelter's Facebook page or website.
