More than 240 kids in Aldergrove, B.C., have nowhere to play because their school playground is too unsafe to use.
The playground at North Otter Elementary School was blocked off by a yellow fence over a month ago.
The playground is “a hazard for children to play on” and in a “grievous state of disrepair," stated a letter from school principal Dianne Chretien to parents. An inspection by the school's maintenance manager found the playground cannot be repaired because it would not meet safety standards, said Chretien.
"We’re just left with these old rickety things that they just keep welding and fixing. But brand new schools are going up all over Langley and new subdivisions with playgrounds and the district seems to have money for that,"’ Jackie Godin, a parent at North Otter, told Global News.
Chretien says the school's only option is to replace the playground with a new one at a cost of $80,000 to $90,000 — an amount the school does not currently have to put towards a new structure.
Parents say they've been able to raise only $6,000 so far, according to Global.
