Surrey Is A C-Grade City, Says Report Card

Surrey Report Card Shows Room For Improvement

Residents of Surrey give their home an overall C grade, according to the city’s first report card.

According to a new report from the non-profit group Surrey Cares, people want to see improvements in crime rates and transportation, which both received D+ marks.

Under the topic of "getting around," 60 per cent of respondents said they travel outside of Surrey and spend half an hour on their commute, an average of 10 minutes longer compared to elsewhere in B.C.

“For people to get around the city, it’s a significant challenge. People rely on their vehicles. In order for us to attract business, those transportation mechanisms are so important,” Anita Huberman, who is part of the survey group, told News 1130.

The survey reports that Surrey’s overall crime rate is 12 per cent higher then the rest of B.C.

Crime has been top of mind in the community, especially after the September death of 17-year-old Serena Vermeerch, who was killed on her way home. Many residents are asking why the suspect in her case wasn't more closely monitored after serving 20 years in jail for a violent sexual assault.

The homicide led to a “Take back Surrey” rally where people demanded change and more attention to safety.

Other categories that received a D+ rating include standard of living and housing.

However, the report card also shows residents are proud of the city’s parks, festivals, and events.

Even with a C grade, the city averages 1,000 new residents per month.
