Canadian electro-rock band Crystal Castles have split.
As reported in NME singer Alice Glass announced she was leaving the group, which also includes producer Ethan Kath, this morning (Oct. 8) via her official Twitter account.
I am leaving Crystal Castles.— ALICE GLASS (@ALICEGLASS) October 8, 2014
My art and my self-expression in any form has always been an attempt towards sincerity, honesty, and empathy for others.— ALICE GLASS (@ALICEGLASS) October 8, 2014
For a multitude of reasons both professional and personal I no longer feel that this is possible within CC.— ALICE GLASS (@ALICEGLASS) October 8, 2014
Although this is the end of the band, I hope my fans will embrace me as a solo artist in the same way they have embraced Crystal Castles.— ALICE GLASS (@ALICEGLASS) October 8, 2014
Crystal Castles formed in 2004 and released their first single/EP "Alice Practice" in 2006. Three albums were released over the band's career starting with "(I)" in 2008.
The band was also noted for its rather explosive live shows which included a few melees with security. In 2009 at the Sonar festival in Barcelona Glass moved into the crowd with security trying to hold her. According to Gigwise Glass started throwing punches before dismantling the drum kit and tossing it at a security guard. Kath also joined the fray. And at the 2008 Glastonbury Festival the band's set was almost shut down after Glass scaled the top of a speaker stack and dove into the crowd repeatedly.
In 2010 and 2012 the band released "(II)" and "(III)" respectively. The former album also featured their cover of the Platinum Blonde hit "Not In Love" which featured guest vocals by The Cure's Robert Smith. This year both Glass and Kath could be found doing solo DJ sets sporadically which would be highlighted on the band's official Twitter account.
There's no word if Glass is currently working on new material.
News of the split was trending on Twitter. Here are some of the reactions:
