Alberta Set To Dial New Area Code

Yes, the province got a new area code (587) just a few years ago (Sept. 2008, to be exact) but this time around the CRTC is adding 825 to the front end of new numbers for residents and businesses.

The new code will come into effect April 9, 2016, says the CRTC, as the existing 403, 587 and 780 codes serving Alberta are expected to run out by July 2016.

The CRTC says existing numbers will not be affected and "there is no need for customers to change from their current area code."

As well, in areas where there is still a supply of 403, 587 and 780 numbers, they will continue to be assigned.

Long distance calling boundaries will remain the same, regardless of area code.
