Study Shows Big Engagement Rings Are Linked To Higher Divorce Rates

Are Small Engagement Rings The Key To Marital Bliss?

Sorry ladies (and gents), but that massive engagement ring (a la Kim Kardashian) you've been wanting may not be the answer to a long and fruitful marriage.

A new study conducted by Emory University’s department of economics surveyed 3,000 people in an attempt to find a correlation between wedding costs and the length of a marriage.

The study showed that men who spent between $2,000 and $4,000 on an engagement ring were 1.3 times more likely to get a divorce than those who spent between $500 and $2,000. However, spending less than $500 on an engagement ring is linked to higher divorce rates as well.

The findings didn't stop at just engagement rings. In fact, they also found that spending a lot of money on a wedding doesn't mean it will be long-lasting. (Financial stress is the worst!)

Couples who spent over $20,000 were linked to higher divorce rates than those who spent between $5,000 and $10.000. And those who spent less than $1,000 on their big day were associated with the lowest risk of divorce.

Of course, each couple is unique, and in some situations a big engagement ring, along with a large, lavish (and expensive) wedding might be perfect. The most important part of the wedding is you and your partner, regardless of all other factors.

So go ahead and have your dream wedding, whatever that may be!
