Despite what you may think while avoiding the dog poop in any of the city's parks, it looks like Toronto's citizens really love their cats.
According to Toronto Animal Services, 220 cats were adopted during the "Fall In Love" campaign that ran from Sept. 20 to Oct. 5,. The two weeks allowed would-be owners to adopt a cat from one of the city's four shelters for $25 ($50 less than usual), plus the cost of a license.
Pet homelessness is actually a bigger problem in Canada in general. According to the recently released Petsmart Charities of Canada Shelter Pet Report, more than 70,000 pets are euthanized in shelters each year because no one adopts them.
Some business owners, however, have been trying to take matters into their own hands, specifically by trying to open cat cafes where those who can't (or don't want to) have them in their apartments can visit furry friends at a coffee shop. Though Toronto's Kitty Cat Cafe has run into difficulty finding a location, the owner is still determined to find a space to share the feline love.
The most recent statistics for pet ownership in the city (from 2011) show there were almost 29,000 licensed cats registered. By comparison, there were about 61,000 dogs on the list.
But that doesn't mean cat lovers can't take over. Toronto Cat Rescue, an agency that finds foster homes for cats until a permanent owner can adopt them, estimates there are about 100,000 wandering cats in the city, with 300 available through the agency at any given time.
So go forth, Toronto cat lovers, and adopt!
