Singing Nun Covers Madonna's 'Like A Virgin' (Yes, Really)

After winning the Italian version of "The Voice" earlier this year, Sister Cristina Scuccia, an Italian Ursuline nun, is releasing her debut single which is quite an, er, interesting choice: Madonna's "Like A Virgin."

Time reports Scuccia, who dazzled fans and the show's judges with a cover of Alicia Keys' "No One" early on in the television competition, has reworked the 1984 title track from Madonna's sophomore album into an "emotional ballad." The single will appear on Scuccia's debut album which is set for release Nov. 11.

"I chose it myself. Without any desire to provoke or scandalize," she told Italian newspaper Avvenire according to The Guardian. "If you ready the lyrics without being influenced by what has gone before, you discover that it is a song about the capacity of love to make people new again. To release them from their past. And this is how I wanted to interpret it. That's why we've transformed it from the pop-dance track it was into a romantic ballad a bit in the style of [American singer-songwriter] Amos Lee."

The approximately five-minute video begins showing Scuccia walking with shots of various Italian religious monuments and footage of the canals in Venice. Scuccia's voice is initially accompanied by piano only before percussion and then strings join the arrangement. The only similarity aside from the song is the fact both Madonna and Scuccia used Venice as a backdrop for their respective videos.

Madonna has yet to comment on the cover via Twitter or Facebook. Earlier this year, as part of "The Voice" competition in Italy, Scuccia appeared with other contestants to sing "Can't Get You Out Of My Head" with Kyle Minogue during one episode.
