The largest upset came in Toronto-Danforth, where incumbent Cathy Dandy lost to the NDP-backed Jennifer Story. Dandy had New Democrat support in 2006 and 2011, but lost it in a party dispute over maintaining that support. The party has a lot of sway in the ward — which was home to famous NDP brass like Jack Layton and Paula Fletcher.
Ausma Malik, in Trinity-Spadina, won her ward despite a palpable anti-Islamic sentiment in the ward. Malik's campaign signs were defaced and she herself was shouted down at debates by protesters.
Sam Sotiropoulos, a trustee with controversial opinions on sexual orientation, lost his seat to Manna Wong in Scarborough-Agincourt. Sotiropoulos had been the target of several student protests and outcry from the gay and trans community.
Michael Ford, the nephew of Rob and Doug Ford, won as trustee in the same ward as his uncle Rob. At 20-years-old, he is the youngest person elected in this vote.
