A former Republican governor used the actions of Canada’s sergeant-at-arms to take a swipe at U.S. President Barack Obama’s gun control stance.
In a Tuesday blog post, former Arkansas governor Mike Huckabee brought up the gunfight in Parliament, mentioning how some MPs “barricaded themselves in a room” and fashioned spears from flagpoles, “ready to impale anyone who burst in.”
“So if you’re keeping score, once again: a would-be mass murderer who might have wiped out half the Canadian government was not stopped by sharpened flagpoles. He was stopped by a good guy with a gun,” Huckabee wrote in praise of Kevin Vickers.
Readers quickly criticized Huckabee, currently a Fox News personality, for his post. Some called him out for generalizing a 29-year RCMP veteran’s use of a weapon on an assailant to frame an argument advocating gun rights.
“As a Canadian, I want you to know that you should be totally ashamed of yourself for using our tragedy to advanced [sic] your short-sighted political goals,” wrote commenter Neil Wereley.
The television host also opened a recent segment of his show “Huckabee” by addressing “radical Islam in America" and explicitly blaming the killings of Cpl. Nathan Cirillo and Warrant Officer Patrice Vincent on “a Muslim convert” and “another radicalized Islamic.”
A clip from the episode, titled “How can we stop radical extremism here?” was uploaded to the Fox site on Monday.
Huckabee has long been a vocal critic about the Obama administration’s gun control stance. However, he failed to acknowledge how Canada’s gun laws are more strict than the ones in place the U.S.
