Elizabeth Nugent identified as woman found in Burlington apartment

Halton Regional Police say they have identified a woman found dead in a Burlington, Ont., apartment earlier this week, but there's no word yet on the cause of her death.

Thirty-two-year-old Elizabeth Nugent — who police say was a resident of the apartment on Pearl Street in the city west of Toronto — was found dead Monday.

Police say officers discovered the body after a tactical team forced its way into an apartment where a man had barricaded himself.

"A special unit was called out and a few hours later we were able to force entry into the apartment," said Sgt. Chantal Corner. "There were some public safety concerns, as he did mention he had a firearm in a busy area."

Forty-one-year-old Malcolm Copeland of Markham, Ont., is charged with second-degree murder and is scheduled to appear in court on Thursday.

The victim and the suspect had been in an intimate relationship, according to police.
