City councillors eye possible budget increases

How will Toronto's new mayor affect spending at city hall? Some councillors are wondering if their office budgets will increase under mayor-elect John Tory, after being slashed by Rob Ford.

"When we first started out in the mega-city our budgets were $80,000, then cut to $53,000, now down to $30,000 and all of the costs are increasing," said Coun. Gloria Lindsay Luby.

Council budgets make up a very small part of the city's multi-billion dollar budget. Mayor Ford always pointed to cutting them as one of his key achievements. Now some councillors are wondering if those budgets will increase again.

Mayor-elect Tory is still getting settled and hasn't indicated what he will do.

But "there is always a move by some members of council to increase those amounts," said Coun. Denzil Minnan-Wong. "There will be some changes you will see on floor of council."
