French government honours Toronto-area D-Day veterans

A dozen local veterans who fought on D-Day were honoured in Toronto today with France's highest military distinction — the Legion of Honour.

Leo Pikulski, 93, was one of the soldiers recognized at the Canadian Forces College on Wednesday.

His platoon had 64 men that went ashore on June 6, 1944 and Pikulski was one of 18 who survived.

"I just can't believe myself that I had the nerve to do that, I wouldn’t be able to do that today," said Pikulski.

His job that day was to scout ahead of his battalion, searching for landmines.

The French government is honouring hundreds of veterans across Canada.
